I am going to post a number of different posts just to give you an edge in your research into biotech penny stocks. This biotech penny stock list will hopefully help you look for your penny stock biotech investment all in one place. Each entry will provide you with a chart and a summary of the stock. The summary is from Yahoo Finance. You will also see price and a few other items such as avg volume. The stock price for this post is the close of day on Friday, November 19, 2010. I will post the dates for the closes on the other posts as I have a chance to put them up. There are quite a few biotech penny stocks so I will have to break them up in a number of posts. Aterna Zentaris, formerly Aterna Laboratories, knows seriously ill patients can’t wait an eternity for new drugs, so the firm is working to take lead drug candidates through trials and to approvals as quickly as possible. The company’s pipeline got a boost from the purchase of Zentaris, which has drugs on the market and a dozen others in development for the treatment of cancer and endocrinology disorders. The firm’s flagship drug, Centrotide, is an endocrine therapy used for in vitro fertilization. It is approved in 80 countries and is marketed worldwide (except for Japan) by Merck Serono; Shionogi and Nippon Kayaku market the drug in Japan.

Aastrom Biosciences brings new life to dying tissue. Its proprietary Tissue Repair Cell (TRC) technology uses a patient’s own cells (harvested from bone marrow) to manufacture treatments for a number of chronic diseases. The new cells, created through a sterile, automated process, are then used in tissue regeneration therapies for the donor patient. The US-based company’s ongoing development activities are primarily focused on applying TRC technology to cardiovascular applications including cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle) and critical limb ischemia (severe obstruction of the arteries).

ACADIA Pharmaceuticals puts genes and drugs together to fight disease. The development-stage company uses its proprietary R-SAT technology to identify genomic targets for its small-molecule (chemical) drug therapies, primarily for central nervous system disorders. ACADIA hopes its lead drug candidate pimavanserin (under development with Valeant, formerly Biovail) will effectively treat psychosis in patients with Parkinson’s disease. In partnership with eye-care heavyweight Allergan, ACADIA is also developing therapies for glaucoma and chronic pain. Other development targets include neurological indications such as insomnia and schizophrenia.

Accentia Biopharmaceuticals is accentuating its positives and eliminating its negatives. The drug development company is focused on two development-stage drugs, multiple sclerosis drug Revimmune and BiovaxID, a possible vaccine for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma being developed by majority-owned subsidiary BioVest International. BioVest also sells cell growth instruments and offers contract manufacturing of cell cultures. Accentia’s Analytica International subsidiary provides consulting services to other pharma and biotech companies. The company and its subsidiaries (including BioVest) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in late 2008.

Achillion Pharmaceuticals is looking for the Achilles heel of infectious disease. The firm is developing treatments for infectious diseases, including antiviral treatments for HIV infection and hepatitis C, as well as antibacterials for fighting drug-resistant hospital-based infections. Lead candidate elvucitabine is in late-stage clinical trials for the treatment of HIV; the drug is designed specifically for patients who have become resistant to existing antiviral drugs. Achillion is also focused on the development of three hepatitis C treatments (one of which it is developing in collaboration with biotech firm Gilead Sciences). Another candidate is aimed at combating staph and other drug-resistant infections.

Working nimbly with a very sticky subject, Adherex Technologies researches and develops cancer treatments. One of its lead drug candidates targets a tumor’s blood supply and makes those blood vessels weak and leaky by disrupting a key protein. Other potential therapies could make cancer cells more vulnerable to anti-cancer drugs or help prevent hearing loss in children undergoing certain types of chemotherapy. Adherex Technologies’ pipeline is strongly based on compounds that disrupt cadherins, proteins that adhere similar molecules together in cell adhesion. Southpoint Capital Advisors owns a controlling stake in the company.
